The Country
Iceland is an island with an average height of 500 m above sea level. Its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, rises to 2.119 m and over 11 per cent of the country is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe.

West Iceland has long been a favourite with travellers, for its diverse nature, rich fauna and living history and culture. It features prominently during the Commonwealth or roughly from the time that the sagas took place until when they were written down. The Book of Settlement names 100 settlers in the west of Iceland, ten of the 40 sagas are largely set there, and it was home to the greatest Viking Age adventurers who explored the New World.
